When you see a dolphin darting through the ocean orperforming tricks in an amusement park, what is your imageof this extraordinary creature? Is it a funny and cute animal, something like a dog of the sea? In fact, many animals aresmart and playful, but dolphins seem to rise a step aboveother creatures due to their complex brains and socialnetworks. How intelligent are dolphins… a little clevererthan your pet or actually closer to you and me?     Let’s start by looking at a dolphin’s hardware. Theirbrain to body ratio is second only to humans. They havemany specialized brain cells that give them an advancedability in recognition, adaptation, memory, and even problemsolving.Dolphins have been observed using tools such assponges to dig on the seafloor and seashells to scoop up fish. They sometimes use objects as toys, passing them back andforth as we might throw a ball to each other.Dolphins also putsocial networks to good use, engaging in cooperative fishingand even socializing with other species. Dolphins willsometimes play with whales, letting the giant pick them upand let them roll off its back.     Even more astounding is the use of language. Eachdolphin has a signature whistle which it will respond to. Theyare the only creature besides humans to have names!Although dolphins have been taught some human language,we still cannot understand theirs. It makes you wonder whichis really the smarter, us or them?
